At least 35 people in Afghanistan are dead after a passenger bus was hit by a fuel tanker causing a massive blast, local officials say.

The collision happened on Sunday (local time) on a main highway between Kandahar and Kabul.

"In the accident, 35 people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded," local governor Bismillah Afghanmal told AFP news.

The tanker driver and a passenger in the truck died immediately in the explosion, officials said.

Drivers on the highway are known to drive at high speeds to avoid attacks, as the Kabul-Kandahar road passes through conflict-prone areas.
