A man armed with a meat cleaver has been shot by police in central Manhattan, New York, after refusing to put down the weapon.
They shot the man outside Penn Station, at about 5pm on Thursday (9am NZ time), after he allegedly attacked a young police officer with a meat cleaver, the New York Post has reported.
Officers shot the suspect several times, and he is in critical condition.
The police officer who was attacked has been taken to hospital.
