Fresh claims revealed in a new US crime documentary point to a new suspected killer in a famous 20-year-old murder case.

The documentary suggests pageant princess JonBenet Ramsey was killed by her older brother Burke, who was nine at the time of her death.

Six-year-old JonBenet was found dead in her parents' basement on Boxing Day, 1996, and no one has ever been charged with her murder.

She was found under a white blanket with a nylon cord around her neck, her wrists tied above her head and duct tape covering her mouth.

Investigators believe they have now decoded six seconds of an unheard 911 phone call, using new technology.

The recording reveals what investigators say is three people talking, after Mrs Ramsey, who made the 911 call, thought she had hung up.

A voice believed to be her father says: "We're not speaking to you," and another voice believed to be her mother says: "What did you do? Help me, Jesus."

It suggests the parents were talking to their son, Burke.

The documentary airs in New Zealand on Sunday, September 25, at 8:30pm on Prime.
