A six-year-old has captured the attention of US president Barack Obama and much of the world with a handwritten letter.

The young New Yorker, Alex, wrote to President Obama asking him if a young Syrian refugee could come and live with his family.

His letter, which has gone viral, was inspired by images of 5-year-old Syrian boy Orman Daqneesh sitting in the back of an ambulance.

Alex offered to teach Orman English, share his toys with him and take him to birthday parties.

"Park in the driveway or on the street and we'll be waiting for you guys with flags, flowers and balloons. We will give him a family and he will be our brother," he wrote.

President Obama has described the letter as a beautiful display of the humanity of a young child who hasn't learned to be cynical, suspicious or fearful.
