Just six months after being reopened from a previous crash, The Smiler rollercoaster has broken down again.

The ride is part of the Alton Towers park in England, where five people were seriously injured and two people had their legs amputated in another crash in June last year.

On Thursday, a number of thrill seekers were left hanging upside down, suspended vertically 18 metres in the air.

Alton Towers released a statement explaining the ride "was brought to a stop to investigate an incident after a piece of rubber came away from one of the carriages".
