Family home of 35 years gets a new life

As Dorothy once famously said: "there's no place like home", and that is especially true for one Christchurch family.

Their house has been much more than just four walls and a roof. It's been a family home for 35 years and has stood proudly since the 1880's – built by hand in the days before electricity.

But the Christchurch earthquakes left the house so damaged it was set to join the rubble.

The family have been clinging on to their crooked home for the past five years and restoring it was just too big of a job.

Parts of the house were put on TradeMe and that is where Jamie McMurtrie enters the picture.

He came to buy the staircase but instead walked away with the entire house.
