Australian police are working to identify a substance that has landed eight people in hospital on the Gold Coast.

Police found some of the group having hallucinations and swimming in a canal at Surfers Paradise.

"Fortunately there was a sober member of the group here, who's contacted QAS and police," an officer told local media.

It's not known exactly what substance the seven men and one woman took. One of them remains in an induced coma.

The Queensland Ambulance Service's Paul Young says the outcome could have been fatal.

"Any illegal drugs or unknown substance… the effect is totally unknown, and what they could have on different people is totally different. Could they be deadly? Most certainly."
