A young boy shot and killed in a senseless school shooting in the US last month has been remembered at a very special superhero-themed funeral.

Six-year-old Jacob Hall was one of two people killed at Townville Elementary School by a South Carolina teen on September 28 - the other being the shooter's father, Jeffrey DeWitt Osborne.

Hundreds of mourners arrived at Oakdale Baptist Church dressed head-to-toe in superhero garb, with more than 1500 people attending the funeral in total - including US Senator Tim Scott and Governor Nikki Haley.

Young Jacob was a massive fan of superheroes, and was placed in his coffin wrapped in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles blanket.

Independent Mail reported that every night before bed, Jacob would tell his parents that his alter ego Cat Boy would look after Townville while all its residents slept.

Many of those who attended the funeral posted pictures of themselves wearing their superhero outfits, using the hashtag #superheroesforjacob.
