The last survivor of a Chinese building collapse was protected by her dead parents in their embrace.

The three-year-old was pulled from the rubble of the four collapsed apartment buildings 15 hours after they came down.

The buildings collapsed on Monday evening local time. Rescue teams had been searching the debris by hand as the risk for further collapse was too great to use machinery.

The girl and her parents were found deep in the debris by rescuers.

The child had only minor injuries, but her parents died after being struck on the back and head by a piece of cement floor, Chinese State Broadcaster CCTV said.

"We first found a young man. Then his wife and daughter were found as we were clearing the rubble," firefighter Sun Jing told CCTV.

"We found them tangled together, with mother and father facing down and the little girl between their bodies facing up."

Twenty-two people died in the collapse. The young girl is one of six survivors.
