An American woman who went walking on a local trail got the surprise of her life after bumping into Hillary and Bill Clinton on the path.

Mother-of-two Margot Gerster took her daughters on a hike in the woods Chappaqua, New York, wanting relax after feeling "heartbroken" about the election result.

Mrs Clinton, who conceded to Donald Trump for the Presidency on Wednesday night (NZ time), also lives in Chappaqua.

Mrs Gerster wrote in a Facebook post that the walk was deserted, and they had not bumped into anyone else.

"As we were leaving, I heard a bit of rustling coming towards me and as I stepped into the clearing there she was, Hillary Clinton and Bill with their dogs doing exactly the same thing as I was. I got to hug her and talk to her and tell her that one of my most proudest moments as a mother was taking Phoebe with me to vote for her," she wrote.

Mrs Gerster wrote that Clinton "hugged and thanked" her, and the two exchanged pleasantries, before each continuing on their way.

She was moved by the run-in, saying "Now, I'm not one for signs but I think ill definitely take this one. So proud (sic)".

She hashtagged the post with #iamstillwithher #lovetrumpshate #keepfighting #lightfollowsdarkness.
