Soon-to-be US President Donald Trump has wished his "many enemies" a happy new year.

Taking to Twitter, his preferred method of communication, Mr Trump sent "love" to "those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don't know what to do".

The abrasive message divided opinions, with one follower saying he "woke up on the wrong side of humanity this morning" and others calling him "pathetic", "beyond ridiculous" and a "petulant child".

Mr Trump has regularly tweeted messages to his "enemies". In 2013 he marked the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks by extending "best wishes to all, even the haters and losers".

In 2014 he tweeted the "haters and losers... cannot help the fact they were born f**ked up".

Mr Trump becomes US President January 20.
