Shots have been fired outside the US Embassy in Ankara, less than 24 hours after the Russian ambassador to Turkey was shot dead.

Turkish police have detained a man, state-run Anadolu agency reports.

Anadolu says the man fired eight or nine shots into the air from a pump-action shotgun hidden in his coat at around 3:50am local time.

In light of recent events, the US embassy in Ankara and its consulates in Istanbul and Adana will be closed on Tuesday.

There are no reported injuries.
