Sydney records hottest December night ever

Sydney has sweltered through its hottest December night ever.

The mercury hit a low of 27.2 degrees overnight and by morning temperatures were already in the 30s.

In all the heat, the beach was the place to be.

"Just having a swim with the boys - had a hot day at work, felt good to get out," said one roasting Sydneysider.

The heatwave has prompted its fair share of reaction on social media, including ribbing from those living in hotter parts of the country.

But spare a thought for those working outside, with the heat causing problems for firefighters in the Hunter Valley.

Bush fires have threatened homes across the region and residents were told to prepare for the worst.

But there is some relief on the way. Incredibly, the soaring temperatures will drop from the early 40s today to low 20s tomorrow.
