A vegan cafe in the UK is turning away customers trying to buy coffees with the country's new £5 note, because it contains animal fats.

Sharon Meijland, who owns the Rainbow Cafe in Cambridge, has posters up warning customers about the new banknote ban.

But since taking the stance, Ms Meijland says she's received "frightening" online abuse.

"I'm 66 now and this abuse leaves me very frightened - it's so horrible that we try to do the right ethical thing and it ends up like this," she told The Telegraph.

"All of our customers have been incredibly supportive and I'd like to point that out.

"Using the new £5 note which contains animal products is something we just felt impossible to condone."

"This is not just a restaurant," says Ms Meijlan. "It's a restaurant where tiny details like this are really important."
