The Obama administration is engaged in a war of words with Downing Street over comments by the Secretary of State, John Kerry, about Israel.
The British said it was "not appropriate" to criticise the composition of the democratically elected Israeli government over settlement building.
But the US State Department hit back, pointing out what Mr Kerry said was in line with UK government policy.
The stoush follows a resolution at the United Nations, led by New Zealand, which criticised Israel's settlements on Palestinian land.
