Two of London's busiest underground stations have been evacuated after the discovery of an unexploded bomb dating all the way back to World War II.

Workmen dredged up the device while working at the River Thames on Friday morning (NZ Time) at Victoria Embankment, close to Westminster Tube station.

The discovery caused extensive delays during the evening commute home at 5.15pm Thursday local time.

A bomb disposal crew is at the scene.
