A cash reward is being offering to find the person who cruelly chopped off a dog's nose and ears.

A distressed local found the dog in southwest Detroit, Michigan, and alerted an animal welfare group.

"This kind of cruelty is unacceptable," said Mark Ramos, lead investigator for the Michigan Cruelty Society.

"We need to be a voice for these animals, and as a community we need to speak through our strong actions to make sure this doesn't happen again."

A rescue team rushed the dog to the Mackey Centre for Animal Care. The dog was immediately assessed and is being cared for by veterinarian staff.

The dog is described as "friendly" and will eventually be available for adoption.
