Queen Elizabeth II attended a church service near her rural Sandringham estate on Sunday, being seen in public for the first time since before Christmas.

The 90-year-old British monarch was applauded by well-wishers as she arrived by car at St Mary Magdalene Church.

She attended the 11am service with Prince Phillip, Prince William and his wife, Kate.

She was dressed in royal blue, with a lighter blue blanket visible on her lap as she was driven to the church.

The Queen is a regular churchgoer, but missed the Christmas Day service for the first time in decades due to what Buckingham Palace said was "a heavy cold".

She also missed church on New Year's Day as she continued to recover.
