Mexico will pay the US back after it builds a wall on its southern border, President-elect Donald Trump is now claiming.

He campaigned on a promise that Mexico would be forced to pay for the wall, aimed at keeping out "criminals, drug dealers [and] rapists".

On Friday (NZ time) it was reported he'd be asking Congress to fund it, and has now confirmed it will indeed be the US footing the bill - but denied it'd be paid for out of taxpayers' pockets.

"The dishonest media does not report that any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later!" the former reality TV star tweeted overnight.

Former Mexican President Vincente Fox lashed out at Mr Trump, also via Twitter, saying Mexico was not going to pay for his "racist monument".

A spokesperson for Mr Trump told ABC News Mr Trump hadn't broken any promises by getting Americans to fund the wall's construction.

"I think he's going to continue to talk to [the Mexican government] about that," said Sean Spicer.

An hour after updating his position on the wall, Mr Trump gloated about how The Celebrity Apprentice's ratings have fallen since he left the show and Arnold Schwarzenegger took over.
