It seems fairytale love stories do come true after all, as a Boston Marathon bombing survivor recently got engaged to the firefighter who saved her life.

Roseann Sdoia, the woman who lost her leg from the marathon attack, told The New York Post she and firefighter Mike Materia were engaged - and she owes it to her mother's dogged matchmaking.

"In the hospital, my mom tried to set me up with him," Ms Sdoia, now a motivational speaker, said.

"She was like, 'Oh, did you see that firefighter? He's so cute.' And I was like, 'Mom, I just got blown up.'"

On the day of the bombing - April 15, 2013 - Ms Sdoia, a long distance runner, was standing at the finish line when the bombs went off.

Mr Materia rushed to her side and stayed with her on the ride to hospital. He continued to visit her while she was in intensive care and it was there that their friendship blossomed.

Two months after the bombing they went on their first date.

The pair plan to marry later this year and are releasing a book next month titled Perfect Strangers about four people affected by the bombings.
