A UK woman's plea to help find her great-great-grandmother's wedding dress now has thousands of people around the world on the lookout.

Tess Newall issued the call for help on Facebook after the dress went missing from an Edinburgh drycleaner.

In less than a day, the post has been shared more than 186,000 times from all over the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Ms Newall wore the dress her great-great-grandmother made in 1870 at her wedding in June last year.

"Kleen Cleaners in Edinburgh used to be the best but recently fell into crooked hands and have gone into liquidation. It seems that the dress was taken to be sold, so it could be winging its way anywhere.

"I realise there are far greater issues in the world but it means the world to us," she wrote.

She said the dress deserved more family memories "to be woven into its threads".
