Dubai is soaring into the future after carrying out a successful test run of an Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) capable of carrying people.

The AAV has one seat and can carry up to 100kg. It can fly for a maximum of 30 minutes, with a top cruising speed of 160km/h.

"The future is now in the making. Our talk about autonomous vehicles has become a reality. It is now high time to move to Autonomous Aerial Vehicles," Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority director general and chairman Mattar Al Tayer told the Khaleej Times.

The goal of the AAV is "aimed at transforming 25 per cent of total individual trips in Dubai into self-driving trips using various modes of transport by 2030," he said.

It is expected to begin operations in July 2017.

"The successful operation of AAV is considered a big step towards innovative and smart mobility solutions for reducing city traffic congestions," Mr Al Tayer said.
