A pair of men in their early 20s have been charged by police after footage of their vicious assault on a beloved marsupial came to light.

One of the men can be seen chasing the quokka - an iconic marsupial native to Western Australia - and kicking it into a wall, while the other man filmed.

The man filming can be heard laughing as his acquaintance kicks the animal, while the other calls the quokka a "little c***" as he pursues it.

The assault took place at Rottnest Island on Sunday evening, according to local police.

Upon seeing the footage, police found the men as they attempted to leave the island on Monday, and have since charged them with cruelty to animals.

The duo, aged 20 and 21, will appear at Fremantle Magistrates Court in March.
