An Australian KFC restaurant is under fire for refusing an elderly woman access to its staff toilet, causing her to wet herself.

In a Facebook post her carer says the elderly woman had asked to use the bathroom at the fast food restaurant in Darwin, but a staff member didn't let her.

She could not wait, and was very upset when she wet herself, the Facebook post alleged.

The post has since been deleted, but said the woman was in tears and humiliated after the confrontation, 7 News reports.

"She cried because she had wet her dress… I cried because this beautiful women had been treated with total disrespect and was robbed of her dignity [sic]" the post said.

A KFC spokeswoman has contacted the carer organisation and says the fast-food restaurant regrets the incident, but it could not allow the woman to the toilet because of health and safety rules.

"Whilst we sympathise with the customer's situation, due to the size of the restaurant, it does not have a toilet for customer use and our staff toilets are only accessible through the restaurant kitchen," she said.
