A woman who had a "burning" headache turned out to have a live cockroach crawling inside her skull.

Selvia, from Chennai, India, went to four hospitals before the eventual 45-minute extraction, according to the New Indian Express.

One of the doctors at the hospital told media it was the first such case they had seen in 30 years of practising.

"I could not explain the feeling but I was sure it was some insect. There was a tingling, crawling sensation," Selvia told the New Indian Express.

"Whenever it moved, it gave me a burning sensation in my eyes."

Eventually the live cockroach was removed using clamps and a sucker, and Selvi's ordeal was over.

Doctors say if the bug had died, it could have caused an infection close to Selvi's brain.
