Weddings can take a lot of meticulous preparation, but they say there are things you can't plan for - weather and beluga whales.

One bride in Connecticut was upstaged by one of the curious marine mammals at her wedding at the Mystic Aquarium recently.

Just as the couple was about to take the plunge, with the celebrant probably ready to ask for any objections, the whale comes swimming into view, captured in a photo for eternity and the internet's pleasure.

The image was posted on imgur with the caption: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something Beluga" and has since been viewed more than a million times.

It also made for instant meme material, with numerous attempts at re-working the image into amusing scenarios including the beluga as the celebrant, as a remorseful and longing beluga ("I should have told her I loved her when I got the chance") and a beluga best man.

But the experience is far from unique, with a number of other wedding photos at the same aquarium featuring one of their belugas as the third wheel.

Catering company Ocean Blue Catering markets the aquarium to couples as a "once-in-a-lifetime event in our one-of-a-kind setting".

And it certainly does deliver on that promise.
