A man who broke into a Brisbane home to steal two vehicles was caught and held by two construction workers as he fled across the city yesterday.

As a police chopper followed, the 21-year-old thief drove one of the cars across the city, running red lights and reaching speeds of more than 100km/h.

The vehicle then crashed into a number of parked cars at an intersection, trapping a 52-year-old woman inside, causing her minor injuries.

The driver fled the vehicle on foot and allegedly assaulted a female bystander, as he ran from the scene.

As a witness chased the man, two construction workers stepped in. They were able to catch and detain him on their nearby worksite until police arrived.

The man has been charged with unlawful and dangerous of a motor vehicle, burglary and fraud.
