Wrong-way driver causes fatal, fiery crash on Australian highway

A woman is dead after a driver drove his car erratically in the wrong direction on a Western Australia highway for several kilometres.

Drivers along the Bussel Highway on Saturday afternoon had to swerve out of the green Toyota Landcruiser's way, while others could do nothing but film the vehicle.

Having narrowly missed several vehicles, the Landcruiser collided head on with a car driven by 61-year-old Jenni Pratt who died immediately in the fiery crash, 7 News reports.

The impact set the vehicles alight, sending a plume of black smoke high into the air.

Ms Pratt's passenger is in a critical condition in hospital while the 45-year-old male driver of the Landcruiser is also in a critical condition.

Police say the man's vehicle rolled and he was thrown from the car.

Amateur footage of the car's unpredictable driving shows the car travelling at speed as oncoming cars try desperately to avoid it.

One witnesses continues filming as they run toward the mangled crash site.

Western Australia Police are still investigating, with the motive of the driver unclear.
