An 11-year-old girl is set to become Britain's youngest mother, in a case which has shocked the nation and launched a police investigation.
The child, who is unable to be named, is believed to have got pregnant to a male only a few years older than her, police say.
The age of consent for sexual activity in the United Kingdom is 16 for both men and women.
The local authority is seeking strict reporting restrictions in the family division of the High Court, reports The Guardian.
The current youngest mother, Tressa Middleton, was 12 when she gave birth in 2014. The father was 13.
"I send her my warmest congratulations but it will be incredibly tough. At that age you're so worried about what other people think at school," she told The Sun.
Britain's youngest father is Sean Stewart, who managed to reproduce at the age of 12 in 1998.
The number of UK teenagers giving birth has dropped to the lowest levels since 1946, according to the Office for National Statistics.
