Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been snapped reading a news article about Vice President Mike Pence's use of personal email account for work purposes.

Ms Clinton's election campaign was derailed by an FBI investigation into her use of a personal email server. No charges were laid, but she reportedly credited the ongoing nuisance for her loss to Donald Trump.

Mr Trump led chants of "lock her up!" at his campaign rallies, and he and Mr Pence regularly criticised Ms Clinton's mistake.

Twitter user Pere Noel was on a flight from Boston to New York on Saturday (NZ time) when he saw Ms Clinton reading a copy of newspaper USA Today, with the headline: "Pence used personal email in office".

On Friday (NZ time) it was revealed Mr Pence used his AOL account to discuss sensitive matters while he was governor of Indiana. His account was even compromised by scammers, who gained access to his contact list and perhaps even his actual emails.

Some of the emails Mr Pence sent and received on his personal account discussed FBI arrests, homeland security issues and security at his home.
