A young Australian woman has been left with a burnt face, burnt hair and blistered hand after her headphones exploded on a recent flight from Beijing to Melbourne.

The battery-operated headphones exploded while she was asleep, about two hours into the flight.

"As I went to turn around I felt burning on my face," she said. "I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck.

"I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor. They were sparking and had small amounts of fire.

"As I went to stamp my foot on them the flight attendants were already there with a bucket of water to pour on them. They put them into the bucket at the rear of the plane."

The cover and battery had melted and had stuck to the cabin floor. For the rest of the flight, the cabin smelled of burnt plastic and hair, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said in its report on the incident.

ATSB confirmed the batteries had caused the explosion. It has not revealed the make or model of the headphones.

It comes after the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was banned from all flights worldwide in October, amid growing incidents of the smartphone catching fire.
