In a bizarre case that has police and residents stumped, at least seven cats in one street in a small US town have been mysteriously shaved without their owners' permission.

The Waynesboro, Virginia moggies were shaved on the belly, groin and leg areas with a razor.

The cats weren't harmed otherwise and are clearly cared-for pets, not stray or feral cats.

"The shaving appears to be almost surgical," said Capt Kelly Walker of the local police force.

Police are no closer to finding the kitty culprit and have no witnesses or leads.

Residents have put up flyers calling for information.

"Our world grows stranger and stranger, with each passing day," a post on the Waynesboro.com Facebook page read.
