A trekker has been found alive nearly seven weeks after going missing in Nepal, but help came too late for his girlfriend.
Taiwanese man Liang Sheng-Yueh was trapped in a remote canyon near Tipling village, in the Dhading district, for almost two months, with his girlfriend Li Chen-Chun.
She died just three days before he was found by a high-altitude search and rescue team.
Madhav Basnyat, one of the rescuers, told AFP Mr Liang was sleeping when they found him.
"He woke up after he heard us. We were very surprised to find him alive."
The couple, both first-year students at Taiwan's National Dong Hwa University, had gotten lost in a snowstorm while trekking on the Ganesh Himal trail.
When they tried to find a village for help, they ended up at the edge of a waterfall and couldn't climb back up, Mr Liang said.
Doctors in Kathmandu said Mr Liang lost more than 30kg during his 47-day-long disappearance.
When the couple ran out of food, they had to survive on just water.
"When he was brought in he had maggots and was starved because he hadn't eaten," Dr Sanjay Karki said.
Several guides and a helicopter were hired by local police to help track the couple down, after they failed to check in on March 10.
The search efforts were hampered by continuous snowfall and occasional avalanches.
