An 18-year-old in Louisiana could spend several months in jail after allegedly cursing in front of an elderly woman.

Jared Dylan Smith was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace through language.

According to the arrest report, Smith was standing next to the 75-year-old and "yelled the word 'f***' and clearly disturbed her peace".

He now faces a fine of up to US$100, or up to 90 days in jail, under Louisiana law.

In the law, "disturbing the peace" includes "addressing any offensive, derisive, or annoying words to any other person who is lawfully in any street, or other public place; or call him by any offensive or derisive name, or make any noise or exclamation in his presence and hearing with the intent to deride, offend, or annoy him, or to prevent him from pursuing his lawful business, occupation, or duty".

There were no other witnesses at the time and Smith has denied the accusation.

He's currently being held at the Ouachita Correction Center on a US$200 bond, according to local media.
