A 17-year-old girl has been killed in a shark attack while surfing with her father near Esperance in Western Australia.

They were at the popular surf break known as Kelp Beds. The teen was mauled by an unidentified shark on Monday afternoon (local time), was treated on the beach by paramedics and rushed to hospital where she later died of her injuries.

It's understood her leg was badly mauled and she lost a lot of blood.

The girl's mother and two sisters reportedly watched in horror from the beach.

Nearby Wylies Bay beach has been closed until future notice and is being patrolled for any shark sightings.

At the same beach in 2014, Sean Pollard lost his left arm and right hand when two great whites attacked him.
