A toddler who idolises the TV character Doc McStuffins shut down a cashier who questioned if she wanted a doll to match her race, according to her mother.
Brandi Benner said she took Sophia to Target to pick out a reward for successfully using the potty.
The two-year-old picked a doll wearing a doctor's outfit. However when they went to the checkout, Ms Benner says the troubles picked up.
First, the cashier allegedly asked the young girl if she had picked out the doll as a present for someone else.
"The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, 'Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?'," Ms Benner said.
She says the cashier told Sophia: "But she doesn't look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you."
"I immediately became angry, but before I could say anything, Sophia responded with, 'Yes, she does. She's a doctor like I'm a doctor. And I'm a pretty girl and she's a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?'," Ms Benner said.
"This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren't born with the idea that color (sic) matters. Skin comes in different colors (sic) just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful."
Ms Benner said her daughter loved the TV show Doc McStuffins, which features a young black doctor and is how the toddler learned the word "stethoscope".
She shared her experience on Facebook where it's gained international attention.
"Baby girl making a grown woman feel as dumb as she is. Stay innocent baby girl!! God's girls come in many beautiful shades," one person wrote.
Ms Benner later clarified that she felt the elderly cashier was "completely ignorant to what she was truly saying".
"I feel like in her mind she was being helpful and making conversation with my daughter. I'm not saying her ignorance makes it ok, just proves her white privilege."
