An Australian man is suing American Airlines claiming he was squashed beside two "grossly obese" passengers.

Michael Anthony Taylor from New South Wales wants more than AU$100,000 (NZ$107,000) in damages for the long haul flight from Sydney to Los Angeles in 2015. He says flight crew refused to move him to another seat, despite him being "crushed" - flaring up an existing back problem.

Documents lodged to court say the body of the passenger next to Mr Taylor "spilt over and encroached" into his seat, forcing him to "contort his body into a series of positions including standing up, crouching, keeling and leaning forward", News.com.au reports.

His lawyer, Thomas Jansen, told News.com.au Mr Taylor asked on numerous occasions if he could change seats or even sit in the aisle or toilet to alleviate his pain. Mr Jansen says he was repeatedly refused.

Mr Taylor says he's since experienced aggravation of pre-existing scoliosis, a condition which causes the spine to curve out of shape.
