A dog owner has been left distraught after her beloved Labrador was stabbed to death in front of her at a local park.

On Wednesday at Apple Blossom Reserve in Mirrabooka, Perth, Bridgette was walking her four-year-old pet Luna.

Luna was off the leash when a man approached her. He bent over her - then to Bridgette's shock Luna fell over, bleeding heavily.

Bridgette rushed to her aid, but it was too late. Luna bled out in her arms.

"I just picked her up and lay her on top of me and felt her heart and I couldn't feel anything. When I couldn't feel her breathing I knew she was gone," Luna's devastated owner said.

The man then escaped, leaving Bridgette with her dead dog.

"For this to happen, it's gut-wrenching for everyone involved," police officer Neil Morton Smith said.

"We're desperate to get some information from the public and speak to the person responsible."

A 37-year-old man has been charged with Cruelty to an Animal relating to the death of Luna.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on 15 June.
