A man in China has been rescued after almost drowning in a monster pile of plastic bottles which reached more than 5m high.

He was the owner of the plastic bottles recycling station in Jinan City, in China's Shandong Province, and got trapped while trying to catch a ladder on Monday (local time).

By the time firefighters arrived he was exhausted, with hot weather and thin air causing life-threatening danger.

The first rescue attempt saw the firefighters try to drag the man onto a wooden board and lift him out with a sling, but it failed.

Firefighters ended up dismantling the bottom of the fence surrounding the pile, removing the bottles and then freeing the man.

Despite his ordeal, the man escaped without injuries.
