A man and woman in the United States have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after committing horrendous child abuse, which involved the father feeding his dead son to pigs.

Michael Jones, 46, pled guilty and was sentenced in a Kansas City court on Monday for the torture and murder of his seven-year-old son, Adrian in March 2015.

According to CBS, Adrian was locked behind a plywood door in a shower, made to stand in neck-deep water for hours, shackled, bound, starved and beaten.

After the boy's death, Jones bought six feeder pigs and tossed Adrian's thin body into their pen in an attempt to get rid of the evidence of how they had treated him.

Jones and his wife Heather only referred to the seven-year-old as "the boy".

Heather was also sentenced to life in prison for her part in the abuse.

Adrian's biological mother spoke to Jones directly in court saying, "you killed him in the most gruesome, hideous manner."

Both Michael and Heather Jones pleaded guilty to avoid longer sentences but will spend a minimum of 25 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Adrian's grandmother Judy Conway is now calling for a public inquiry into why no-one helped the young boy when others knew what was going on.

Ms Conway described Adrian as a gorgeous little boy with the kindest heart.
