Princess Diana's former lover James Hewitt is recovering from a heart attack and a stroke, which reportedly left him "fighting for his life" last night.

The former army officer needed emergency surgery and doctors are said to have only given him a slim chance of survival.

A relative told a Sunday newspaper: "The family were concerned. He had a pre-existing illness, then got seriously ill. Suddenly it got very critical and he was rushed to hospital."

"It was pretty serious but hopefully we are all OK now."

It comes after the 59-year-old gave a rare interview putting an end to rumours he is Prince Harry's real father.

Mr Hewitt had a five year affair with Princess Diana while she was married to Prince Charles.

Hewitt is expected to remain at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for several weeks.
