US President Donald Trump has politically dug himself a number of holes, as the saying goes, but the latest problem has appeared in the form of an actual sinkhole outside his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
"A 4' x 4' [1.2m x 1.2m] sinkhole has formed on Southern Boulevard directly in front of Mar-a-Lago," the Palm Beach town authority said on its website.
"It appears to be in the vicinity of the newly installed water main. West Palm Beach Utilities distribution crews have secured the area and will most likely need to do some exploratory excavation today. One lane is closed but the road remains open."
As expected, the metaphors have poured in.
Mr Trump visited Saudi Arabia over the weekend and sealed $110 billion in deals. Riyadh will buy US arms to help it counter Iran, with options running as high as $350 billion over 10 years.
It was his first foreign trip since taking office and one the White House hopes will shift the focus away from domestic controversies such as his firing of the former FBI chief and investigations into his administration's possible links to Russia.
