A plane heading to Shanghai made an emergency landing in Sydney after a huge hole was found in an air inlet.

The damage was discovered shortly after the China Eastern Airlines MU736 plane took off on Sunday evening, China Plus reports.

Photos posted by Chinese media outlets show a large hole on of the plane's engine casings.

No one was injured, and the company said it was "timely" that the damage was noticed early on in the flight.

The plane made a safe landing at Sydney airport, and the incident is being investigated.
