A pregnant teenager is facing jail after shooting her boyfriend dead in what his family has called a YouTube stunt gone wrong.

Minnesota man Pedro Ruiz, 22, reportedly wanted his girlfriend Monalisa Perez, 19, to shoot him in the chest. His plan was to survive the stunt by placing a book between his chest and the gun, reports Fox 9.

Mr Ruiz convinced Perez the stunt was safe by showing her a book he'd shot previously - the bullet hadn't gone all the way through.

The fame-hungry pair set up two GoPro cameras on Monday night, and she held a handgun about 30cm from his chest and fired, reports Valley News Live.

But the book wasn't thick enough.

"I don't know why they thought the book was supposed to stop the bullet," Mr Ruiz' aunt Claudia Ruiz told Valley News Live.

"It was just a prank gone wrong. It shouldn't of happened like this. It shouldn't have happened at all."

She said the pair had been trying to get famous on YouTube for a while now. Other stunts they'd pulled for the cameras included sneaking a hot pepper into a sandwich and baby powder on a donut, Fox 9 reports.

Video of the tragedy was seized by the police as evidence.

Perez faces charges of manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm. The family say she plans to name the unborn boy after his father - the man his mother accidentally shot and killed.
