Sinkhole swallows car in Missouri

A sinkhole has opened up and swallowed a car in downtown St Louis, US.

It belonged to Jordan Westerberg, who drove with his fiancee to the local YMCA on Friday (local time).

He parked his white Toyota Camry in a close parking spot - but when they returned from the workout, they found a crowd standing around where the car had been parked.

They were looking at the car flipped over at the bottom of a large new crater.

According to city workers, the sinkhole is about six metres deep and two metres wide.

It's not yet known what caused the collapse, but authorities say all the dirt had eroded from underneath the asphalt.

Mr Westerberg told the St Louis Post-Dispatch that he hopes whoever is responsible for the sinkhole will pay him back for his vehicle.
