At least three women are dead and nine injured after a strong explosion in a women's toilet block in one of the busiest shopping centres in Colombia.

Police say the explosion tore through the women's toilets at the Andino mall, in Zona Rosa, Bogota, in what Bogota's Mayor has called a "cowardly terrorist bombing".

The attack happened on Saturday afternoon, during a peak shopping time.

A 23-year-old French woman due to return to France after spending six months volunteering with the poor is among the dead.

A 27-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman also died in hospital.

While no group has claimed responsibility, authorities are focusing on the National Liberation Army.

The rebel group has taken to one of its Twitter accounts to deny any involvement, BBC News reports.
