A Muslim cleric in Australia who married a 14-year-old girl to a 34-year-old man has avoided jailtime.

Ibrahim Omerdic, 62, wedded the pair during a ceremony in Melbourne last September, telling the girl it was her "duty to obey" her new husband.

"If [he] is happy with something, do it," 9 News says it he be heard telling her in mobile footage.

"If [he] is not happy with something, don't do it."

He's been found guilty of unlawfully solemnising the marriage, and on Wednesday was sentenced to two months in prison.

But, he was placed on a two-year recognisance release order, meaning he won't have to serve his time.

"Whatever the view is elsewhere, in Australia marriage is between adults," magistrate Phillip Goldberg said during his sentencing.

Prosecutor Krista Breckweg said Omerdic should go to jail to set a precedent.

"There needs to be a message sent to the community that this will not be tolerated."

The celebrant had his marriage licence revoked after his arrest.
