A man has placed a $4000 bounty on the head of a woman who put a US flag in a toilet bowl and videoed herself urinating on it.
The woman was threatened with additional extreme acts of violence, and said her father's place of employment had been targeted.
Emily Lance from Philadelphia posted the video one of the most patriotic days of the year, the Fourth of July - the date on which the US celebrates its independence.
"F*** your nationalism. F*** your country. F*** your stupid f****** flag," she says in the video.
That video, which she posted to Facebook and Youtube, has now been deleted.
Patriots were outraged, calling her "disgusting", disrespectful and "trash." Some discussed ways to maim her.
Seemingly unfazed by the criticism, Emily Lance wrote: "Soiled flag. Fished out of my toilet. Sold to the highest bidder."
But as the criticism mounted, Ms Lance posted in defence of freedom of speech, then asked people not to take their anger out on her flag-loving father.
"People are wishing illness, harm, and suffering upon me over a piece of fabric. People are willing to MURDER someone over a flag. It's so sad that people don't realize how brainwashed they are. I'm gross for peeing on a symbol? LOOK AT YOURSELVES. You people epitomize all that is foul," she posted.
In a separate post, Ms Lance pleaded for people to leave her family alone.
"Don't take your anger out on the wrong people - you harassing them is displacing your emotions and the equivalent of blaming Jack for what Sally did."
As for the logistics of the urinating, Ms Lance used a GoGirl, a device that allows women to pee standing up.
