Bride gifts glitzy banquet to the homeless after wedding abandoned

A United States woman has made the most of a bad situation after converting her cancelled wedding into a black-tie feast for the poor in her neighbourhood.

Sarah Cummins and her fiancé called off their marriage a week out from the big day. They pair have refused to say what brought about the decision, but were left with a non-refundable contract for an 170-person, US$30,000 ($40,830) banquet at the Ritz.

Rather than let it all go to waste, the Indianapolis bride-to-be decided to gift it to the homeless.

While Ms Cummins herself attended - as well as her mother, aunts and three bridesmaids - the rest of the feast was all for the poor and 12 military veterans.

Ms Cummins personally greeted most of the guests as they arrived on Saturday (local time), and a number of businesses and locals donated posh clothes for the guests to wear.

"For me, it was an opportunity to let these people know they deserved to be at a place like this just as much as everyone else does," Ms Cummins told AP.

As for her wedding dress, however, she said it has thus far been "too painful to think about" - but added that her fiancé's family had paid most of the wedding bill anyway.
