A man has been shot dead by police in a brief standoff at a Sydney train station.

Witnesses say police responding to reports a man was acting violently at Sydney's Central Station on Wednesday night were threatened with scissors.

Video shows the man charging toward the two officers before they each fired several shots, killing him.

In a statement, New South Wales police said officers were called just before 6:45pm following reports of an armed robbery.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported a man armed with scissors confronted the owner of a florist shop at the station.

When officers arrived the man refused to put the scissors down. He was then shot several times at close range.

Witnesses to the shooting can be heard swearing, and one woman says the man is bleeding.

The man has not yet been identified.
